Services
Mountaintop Healthcare is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization formed to fill in gaps in healthcare in Western North Carolina. Dr. Don Teater initiated the formation of this unique clinic model and opened for patient care in January 2008. We have a contractual relationship with another nonprofit, the Good Samaritan Clinic, to provide primary care to uninsured and Medicaid patients as well as other services in our community.

Primary Health Care for the Uninsured
The Good Samaritan Clinic of Haywood Count is currently one of the largest free clinics in the state offering both acute and chronic care to patients. Mountaintop Healthcare has partnered with this well-established free clinic to provide a primary care physician and staffing to improve the efficiency of patient care. Without the Good Samaritan Clinic an estimated 6,500 people in Haywood County would be without access to a primary care provider. To qualify as a patient you must be between the ages of 18 and 64, uninsured, and your income below 200% of the poverty level. Mountaintop Healthcare provides phone support and on-call coverage for all patients at the Good Samaritan Clinic 24/7.
Medicaid Services
There are currently over 2,000 patients who have Medicaid insurance and are not linked with a Carolina Access provider in Haywood County. Many providers in our area are not accepting new Medicaid patients. Most of these Medicaid patients have received care for chronic illnesses at urgent care or the local hospital. With the arrangement for care between the GSC and Mountaintop Healthcare we are able to see new Medicaid patients within a few weeks to establish. To qualify as a Medicaid patient and be seen through our clinic you:
- must not have a “Carolina Access” provider listed on your Medicaid card;
- must be between the ages of 18 - 64;
- must not have an insurance primary to Medicaid;
- must request Mountaintop Healthcare be listed as your Carolina Access provider.
All Medicaid patients are requested to bring their $3.00 copayment and their Medicaid Card to each appointment. Without these two things and a Medicaid card meeting the above stipulations, your appointment will need to be rescheduled.
Narcotic Addiction Program
We will utilize the medication Suboxone in our treatment program for individuals addicted to opiate medications. We are one of the few programs in WNC that is certified to use Suboxone. We already have patients from throughout WNC participating in our program. The Suboxone (buprenorphine) treatment program is well established in the medical and substance abuse treatment communities. It is a very successful model of care. For more information, go to www.buprenorphine.samhsa.gov . We do not file any insurance except Medicare and Medicaid. If patients qualify, a sliding fee schedule will be assessed to charges. Otherwise payment is expected at time of service. If you think you may qualify for our sliding fee schedule please contact our office for a list of documents to bring to your first appointment.
Walk In Dermatology Clinic
We offer a walk-in dermatology clinic twice a week for the community. Our family physician, Dr. Don Teater has a special interest in dermatology. We see suspicious moles and skin lesions, rashes, skin irritations, acne, etc. You do not need to make an appointment. Patients are seen on a first come, first serve basis. We file Medicare and Medicaid only.
Mental Health
Martha Teater is our mental health provider. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist and a licensed clinical addiction specialist. While the medical and mental health aspects of care are already working closely together, Martha is working on a model of integrated care that will increase our ability to work collaboratively with the patients we share in primary care. Mrs. Teater is contracted with a few private insurance companies and is able to file with Medicare and Medicaid. Please contact our office prior to making an appointment to check her provider status with your insurance.
We also have the ability to refer patients, through the Good Samaritan Clinic, to their mental health therapists. Therapy is free to the client but the referral must be generated out of care received by a free clinic patient visit referral.
All mental health visits are scheduled by the individual provider. Please contact our office and a member of our staff can answer questions you might have about this service.
